EFCC UNCOVERS ADDITIONAL 400 GHOST WORKERS IN KWARA, PROBES NUT CHAIRMAN, OTHERS OVER N31M SALARY FRAUD

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Office, says it has uncovered 400 additional ghost workers and N31m salary fraud linked to the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Chairman and others, in Kwara State.

Dele Oyewale, the anti-corruption agency Head of media and publicity, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, June 19.

Oyewale said the sum of N31,000,000 (Thirty-One Million Naira only), meant for the payment of salaries of the ghost workers, was shared by the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State, Salihu Idris Toyin, and the Permanent Secretary, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Bayo Audu Onimago, among others.

According to him, other beneficiaries of the money included, Director of Finance, SUBEB, Ahmed Husain, Coordinator, NUJ, Kwara State, Tijani Idris and Controller of Finance, SUBEB, Omole John.

While confessing to the Commission, the Chairman of the NUT, Salihu Idris Toyin, said a sum of N12million was initially deposited into an account operated by him and his accomplices.

"The money was actually not supposed to come, but when the cash hit the account, I withdrew it and gave it to SUBEB Officials, they gave us N3million for free, and we shared it among ourselves," the Chairman confessed.

Still confessing, he said that another N19 million entered into the accounts, and he withdrew N4million from it, which he used N1.5million for clearing and interlocking of their quarters, adding that the remaining N2.5million is still with him.

He noted that the money he used for clearing and interlocking of the quarters was not receipted.

Recall, the EFCC, Kwara Zonal office, on Thursday, June 11, announced that it discovered 1,000 ghost workers smuggled into the payroll of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board.

The Commission said that all the offenders would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

The Commission assured the general public that the zone would put in its best to ensure that sanity is restored in the State.

It added that the zone would not relent in investigating, arresting, and prosecuting corrupt individuals.
