TRUMP SUSPENDS H-1B AND OTHER VISAS THAT ALLOW FOREIGNERS TO WORK IN THE US

US President Donald Trump has signed an Executive Order temporarily banning the issuing of work visas including the H-1B visa program for highly skilled workers.

The visa ban signed on Monday, June 22 would extend till the end of the year.

The Coronavirus pandemic has gravely affected the US economy. According to data, 22.1 million jobs were lost between February and April.

According to Trump, the entry of additional workers in the US ”presents a significant threat to employment opportunities for Americans affected by the extraordinary economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.”

Critics believe Trump is taking advantage of the pandemic to push his anti-immigration policies.

The Trump administration has slashed the number of refugees that can be admitted and resettled into the US to 18,000. The number was 110,000 when he assumed office.

From 2015 to early 2019, there has been a 32 per cent increase in skilled foreign workers that were denied a work visa by the US.
