COVID-19 DOCTORS, OTHERS SET TO BEGIN STRIKE

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has told the Federal Government that it will embark on an indefinite strike which takes effect from Monday, June 15, 2020.

The Association noted that the call to strike includes doctors managing COVID-19 cases.

Dr Aliyu Sokomba, the National President of the NARD, disclosed this in a letter with reference number NARD/SG/2019-2020/07620/2476 issued to the Federal Government.

The NARD President said the decision of the Association is due to the failure of the Federal Government to fulfil its promises to pay salary arrears and improve working conditions.

Earlier, on May 30, the Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to immediately implement all the agreements it had with the Association, or it will embark on an indefinite strike.

He said the Federal Government has failed to redeem its pledge to provide necessary remuneration and personal Protection equipment (PPE) and other consumables to all health workers managing Covid-19 cases across the country.

“The strike shall, therefore, be total and indefinite. No service of any kind, be it emergency, care at COVID-19 treatment centres shall be exempted.

All members, including all resident doctors, medical officers below the rank of the principal medical officer, and house officers are expected to be part of the strike,” the letter read.

Sokomba emphasized that some of its officials in State facilities suffer more than its Federal counterparts in terms of a good working environment.
