Defence Minister Convenes Emergency Meeting with Service Chiefs Over Rising Attacks on Military Bases
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence has convened an urgent high-level meeting with the country’s top military leadership following a recent surge in attacks on military formations, particularly in the North East.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja, brought together senior security officials including the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Air Staff, and the Chief of Naval Staff, alongside representatives from the National Intelligence Agency.
The emergency session comes amid growing concerns over a series of deadly assaults reportedly carried out by insurgents against military bases in Borno State. Security reports indicate that several senior officers, including three commanding officers of lieutenant-colonel rank, were killed in recent attacks, along with a number of soldiers. Many civilians are also believed to have been abducted during the incidents.
During the meeting, the Defence Minister called for a comprehensive review of ongoing counter-insurgency operations and emphasized the need to strengthen operational strategies against terrorist groups.
Despite the losses recorded by security forces, he noted that insurgent groups have also suffered heavy casualties in recent confrontations with the military.
The meeting forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Defence to improve coordination among security agencies and introduce more effective approaches to tackling terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across the country.
