ECOWAS ISSUE ONE WEEK ULTIMATUM TO MALI MILITARY TO HAND OVER POWER TO CIVILIANS
ECOWAS has issued a one-week ultimatum to the CNSP Mali military junta to name a civilian to head the transition government in the next 7 days, reiterating the stance that the time for coups d 'état in West African countries are over.
Recall that ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Mali following the August 18 coup which led to the arrest and resignation of former President Boubacar Keïta, and called for elections within a year.
Speaking at the 57th summit held in Niamey, Niger's capital, the President of ECOWAS Commission Jean-Claude Kassi Brou ECOWAS commission chief Jean-Claude Kassi Brou has insisted it be led by a civilian president and prime minister for a 12-month period.
In the final statement of an ECOWAS summit in Niger's capital Niamey on Monday, September 7, Brou said Mali's civilian transition president and prime minister "must be appointed no later than September 15".

The Mali military junta began national consultations on the transition of power in Bamako and other regional capitals in the country on September 5. The meeting which involves all Mali stakeholders including; the opposition coalition of civil and religious leaders political parties, former rebels, unions, civil society organisations, and media representatives would end on September 12, three days after the expiration of ECOWAS' ultimatum.
