MALI COUP: ECOWAS SUSPENDS MALI, ASKS MEMBERS TO CLOSE ALL BORDERS TO THE COUNTRY

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Mali from the organisation.

In a statement on Tuesday, ECOWAS asked all its members to close land and air borders to Mali.

It said sanctions will be meted out against all the putschists and their partners and collaborators.

“ECOWAS has noted with great concern the seizure of power by Malian military putschists,” it said.

Recall that on Tuesday night, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced his resignation from office saying his decision is to avoid bloodshed.

Keita, and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, were arrested by rebel soldiers after weeks of unrest on Tuesday, August 18th, 2020.
