Gunmen Kill Two Soldiers in Attack on Army Checkpoint in Abia
In the early hours of Wednesday, gunmen attacked an army checkpoint in Ekenobizi, a border community between Abia and Imo states in Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area, killing two soldiers. The assault occurred around 6:18 a.m., according to a military source, with the attackers arriving in a white Lexus, though the number of gunmen remains unverified.
Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed the incident in a statement, identifying the attackers as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). “Despite the attack, the brave troops successfully repelled the assault, forcing the attackers to flee, leaving behind a Sienna and Lexus Jeep used in the operation,” Unuakhalu stated. “However, two soldiers paid the ultimate price during the firefight.”
The Joint Task Force urged Abia State residents and the South East community to provide credible information to aid in locating the attackers and curbing criminal activities. The force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, ensuring adherence to global best practices and rules of engagement.
