NEW MILITANT GROUP EMERGES IN CAMEROON
A new militant group identified as ‘Cameroon Rebels’ has emerged in the Northern Cameroon region of Ngoundere, in a location identified as Koncha in Faro and Deo, a border town with Nigeria.
A three- minute video of the group released on social media reveals a parade of members of the group clad in military-style camo and armed with AK47 rifles.
A man who appears to be the leader of the group claims their sole mission is to overthrow the government of President Paul Biya.
He was heard speaking in a language described by sources as local Fulfude.
Cameroon is enmeshed in multiple internal and regional conflicts; There is the Separatists war in the North West and South-West regions; organised crime bandits from Central Africa linked with either the Seleka or Anti-Balaka groups or independents; Boko Haram in the Far North borders with Nigeria; as well as stiff political opposition groups from within and outside Cameroon who are pressuring for a regime change.
However, the group did not associate itself with any known rebel movement in or outside Cameroon.
Paul Biya, 87 is one of Africas’s longest-serving rulers. He took over leadership of Cameroon in November 1982.
