Operation Hadin Kai Troops Record Major Gains in Timbuktu Triangle, Disrupt Terrorist Networks
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recorded significant operational successes in the ongoing clearance operations within the Timbuktu Triangle, further weakening terrorist networks active in the area.
Military sources disclosed that troops sustained their advance and successfully cleared and dominated key terrorist strongholds, including Tergejeri, Chiralia, as well as the Ajigin and Abirma general areas. During the operations, troops made intermittent contact with fleeing terrorist elements and engaged them with heavy firepower, leading to the neutralisation of several terrorists.
On January 20, 2026, while consolidating at a harbour area about six kilometres north of Chilaria, troops encountered two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs). One of the VBIEDs was successfully neutralised through prompt and vigilant action. The second device, however, breached the defensive position, damaging some logistics platforms. The incident resulted in casualties, with some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force losing their lives, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured personnel were immediately evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital. Nigerian Air Force assets from the Air Component, working in synergy with other Nigerian Army air platforms, provided continuous aerial overwatch during the evacuation to ensure the safety of ground troops and facilitate further engagements that led to additional terrorist neutralisation.
In a further development, troops discovered mass graves containing an estimated 20 terrorist bodies reportedly killed during previous encounters in the Timbuktu Triangle and buried by their associates. Military authorities said the discovery highlights the extent of terrorist losses and undermines propaganda claims by the insurgents.
Across the theatre of operations, the security situation remains generally stable, with troops maintaining high morale and combat effectiveness. Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians, dismantling terrorist networks, and restoring lasting peace and security across the North East, as operations continue against fleeing terrorist elements.
