Self-Proclaimed Biafra Prime Minister Sentenced in Finland

A Finnish court has sentenced Simon Ekpa, who describes himself as the Prime Minister of Biafra, to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes and tax fraud.

The Päijät-Häme District Court found him guilty of encouraging crimes with terrorist intent, involvement with a terrorist organisation, aggravated tax evasion, and breaching the Attorneys Act.

According to the judgment, between August 2021 and November 2024, Ekpa pursued the secession of Nigeria’s southeastern Biafra region through unlawful activities. The court noted that he used social media platforms to establish political influence while supporting organisations classified as terrorist groups.

It was also established that under his direction, armed groups were formed and supplied with weapons, explosives, and ammunition through his contacts. The court said Ekpa used his X (formerly Twitter) account to incite followers to commit crimes in Nigeria.

This ruling is regarded as Finland’s most significant case to date involving terrorism charges connected to Nigeria.
