Troops Foil Arms Trafficking Network, Recover Weapons in Taraba

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, Sector 3, Operation WHIRL STROKE, have recorded a major breakthrough against arms trafficking in Taraba State, following a series of intelligence-driven operations that led to the arrest of suspected gun runners and the recovery of illicit weapons and ammunition.

The operation, carried out in collaboration with operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), followed the earlier arrest of two suspects, identified as Christopher Adamu and James Yangyang. The suspects were apprehended at Sebos Joint in Mayo Dassa, Jalingo Local Government Area, and at Tautre Village in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area on January 11 and 12, 2026, respectively. Their arrests were the outcome of sustained surveillance and careful operational planning aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal circulation of small arms within the brigade’s area of responsibility.

Building on the initial success, troops of 6 Brigade, Sector 3, acting on credible intelligence, conducted a coordinated cordon-and-search operation at Murubai Village in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area. During the exercise, troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and four rounds of live ammunition from the residence of a suspected arms trafficker, Mr Bazoe John, who is currently on the run.

Military sources said the operation was executed with precision and restraint, and concluded without any casualties or incidents, underscoring the professionalism, discipline, and operational competence of the troops. Efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect and recover additional weapons as part of sustained measures to deny criminal elements freedom of action.

Commending the troops, the Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised their dedication, courage, and professionalism. He noted that the success highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and reaffirms the Nigerian Army’s determination to curb arms proliferation and other criminal activities in the area.

Brigadier General Uwa urged the troops to maintain the momentum while upholding the highest standards of discipline and respect for civil authority, assuring them of continued support from higher headquarters.

The Nigerian Army said the operation further reinforces the commitment of 6 Brigade and Operation WHIRL STROKE to protecting lives and property and ensuring lasting peace and stability across Taraba State and its environs. Members of the public were also encouraged to support ongoing security efforts by providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
