Labour Party Loses Five Reps Members to APC as Defections Continue"

The Labour Party on Thursday lost five of its members in the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the defections during the plenary session, reading letters from the affected lawmakers. The defectors include Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Mathew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), Iyawe Esosa (Edo), and Daulyop Fom (Plateau).

One of the lawmakers explained the decision to switch allegiance, citing constituency dynamics as a factor. “You cannot solely rely on the decisions of people at the constituency level because they have different levels of understanding. My decision is based on conviction,” he said. He added that while some constituents supported the move, others remained skeptical.

It remains unclear if the defections are related to the ongoing internal crisis within the Labour Party.

The Labour Party had gained significant ground during the 2023 general elections, surprising many by winning key legislative seats across the country. However, the defections mark a setback for the party as it navigates internal and external challenges.
