15 MIGRANTS DIE IN SHIPWRECK, 177 RESCUED - UN

The United Nation Refugee Agency, (UNHCR) has announced the recovery of 15 bodies of dead migrants and 177 survivors from two coastguard boats meant to return illegal migrants to Libya.

It had been reported earlier that guards killed at least six migrants in a detention centre at the Medussa islands, off the coast of Italy on Friday. Reuters reported last week how overcrowding led to chaos and the eventual riots.

It has been recorded that the number of people attempting to cross from North Africa to Europe through the Mediterranean sea have surged this year.

The Lybian authorities say more than 23,000 migrants or refugees have been intercepted by the Libyan coastguard by September, 2021.

There have been tales of the inhuman

conditions of migrants and refugees in Libya who face detention. But it seems not enough to deter these people. Reuters says more than 5,000 were arrested in a crackdown during the past week.

"On Friday, guards killed at least six migrants in a detention centre as overcrowding led to chaos, the UN migration agency IOM said, and scores managed to flee the area before being detained again", according to a United Nations Refugee Agency.

According to the Libya’s Government of National Unity, it describes the refugee crisis as: “Dealing with a complex issue in the illegal migration file, as it represents a human tragedy in addition to the social, political and legal consequences locally and internationally".

It therefore called on the United Nations to come to Lybia's aid in solving the humanitarian problem. Libya also noted that most of the migrants are West and Central Africans, especially from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo and others.
