African Militaries Must Unite to Counter Emerging Threats – Defence Chief

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has urged African countries to step up collaboration in cyber defence, counterterrorism, and intelligence sharing to tackle the continent’s rapidly evolving security challenges.

Speaking in Abuja at the maiden African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit (ACDSS) on Monday, Gen. Musa cautioned that terrorism, organised crime, piracy, and conflicts driven by climate change were becoming increasingly complex. He further noted that cyber warfare and artificial intelligence are reshaping modern conflict in ways that demand fresh strategies.

“The threats we face today do not recognise borders — they are asymmetric and digital. Africa must respond with unity, collective intelligence, and joint military action,” the CDS said.

He emphasised that no nation could independently withstand such threats, stressing the need for stronger operational frameworks and the development of an indigenous defence industry across the continent. Gen. Musa also highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and humanitarian efforts, reaffirming the country’s commitment to strengthening regional resilience and cooperation.

“Our fallen heroes remind us of the need to build armed forces that are not only formidable but also accountable and people-focused,” he added.

Delivering his remarks at the summit, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, represented by the Minister of State, Bello Matawalle, praised Gen. Musa for his leadership in hosting the historic meeting. He described the summit as a milestone in African defence diplomacy, demonstrating a renewed determination to boost continental security through partnership.

Badaru also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support of Nigeria’s armed forces, noting that the success of the summit reflects professionalism and unity among Africa’s defence institutions.

He urged participants to build on the progress achieved, with the goal of fostering a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa.
