Anambra Police Arrest Four Suspects, Including Woman, Over Burning of 74-Year-Old Wheelchair-Bound Woman in Abagana
Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a 21-year-old woman, Chinenye Ekwenugo from Ifitedunu, in connection with the gruesome burning of a 74-year-old wheelchair-bound woman in Abagana. The arrest was made on January 26, 2024, at approximately 9 a.m. by operatives from the Abagana Divisional Police Headquarters.
The other suspects apprehended are Uzochukwu Okeke (47), Fidel Anayo (60), and Ikenna Anene (54), all male residents of Abagana. Police operatives also recovered the charred remains of the deceased, her wheelchair, and a casket allegedly procured by the perpetrators.
During interrogation, the female suspect, Chinenye Ekwenugo, confessed that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe—who is currently at large—along with three others, set the victim ablaze and arranged for a casket to bury her before security operatives intervened.
Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to apprehend the prime suspect, Ifeanyi Igwe, who remains on the run. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for an autopsy and further investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, called for calm and ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
The police assured the public that further updates on the case would be provided as investigations progress.
