BREAKING: ASUU AGREES TO CALL OFF STRIKE

Striking lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to call off its eight months strike.

They accepted to call off strike after the Federal Government increased its offer to the union to N70bn.

The FG had on November 20 offered a sum of N65 billion to the ASUU to address earned academic allowances and revitalisation of universities.

The union leadership reached the consensus during a meeting with the Government team led by the minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, in Abuja on Friday, November 27.

This is happening one week after the Federal Government accepted the demand by the ASUU that they be exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

Briefing newsmen after the eight-hours Friday meeting, Ngige said the dialogue was fruitful.

ASUU's President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi also agreed with the minister's remark.

Ngige explained that several issues including salary shortfall, the payment system for lecturers and revitalisation were discussed during the meeting on Friday.

He expressed optimism that the issues will be resolved at their next meeting.

ASUU has been on strike since March over unmet demands by the Federal Government.
