COURT ORDERS CORRECTIONAL CENTRE IN KADUNA TO TRANSFER ZEENAT EL-ZAKZAKY TO AN ISOLATION FACILITY

A Kaduna State High Court has ordered the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna to transfer Zeenat El-zakzaky, wife of embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, to an isolation facility to enable her undergo treatment for COVID-19.

Eons Intelligence reported on Friday, January 22, that Mrs El-zakzaky contracted the virus inside the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna state capital last week.

Ibrahim Musa, IMN Spokesperson, who confirmed the development said Zeenat tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time on January 20, 2021, but the management of the Correctional Centre in Kaduna denied the report.

In a statement signed by the spokesman of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kaduna State Command, Daniel Wadai, there is no report of any COVID-19 infection in any of their facilities and all inmates are safe and well protected.

At the resumption of Mr and Mrs El-Zakzaky's trial on Monday, their counsel, Femi Falana, told the court that Mrs El-Zakzaky has tested positive for COVID-19, and also presented a medical report to back up his claim.

He, however, appealed to the court to allow his client to seek proper medical treatment outside the Correctional Centre in line with the protocols that have been outlined by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control

The appeal was supported by the prosecuting counsel and the Solicitor general of Kaduna State, Chris Umar.

The Presiding Judge of the court, Justice Gideon Kurada, immediately approved that Mrs El-Zakzaky should be transferred to a Government owned isolation and treatment facility.

In December 2015, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zazaky and his wife, Zeenat, were arrested and detained following a conflict between members of the IMN and the Nigerian Army.

They are both facing trial on eight counts of homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of public peace, among others.

El-Zazaky, who arrived at the Kaduna High Court on Tuesday, September 29, had asked the court to revoke the case leveled against them for lack of evidence.

Justice Kurada, however, dismissed the no-case submission and said the court would continue with the trial.

He said El-Zakzaky's application was premature in view of the clear provisions of the Kaduna State administration of criminal justice
