Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has urged the enhancement of cross-border trade between Nigeria and Cameroon, citing its potential to foster unity and economic growth in both nations.

Governor Zulum made this appeal during a bilateral meeting held in Banki, a border town between the two countries. The meeting was attended by members of the National Assembly from Borno State and officials from Cameroon’s Far North region, led by Governor Midjiyawa Bakari.

The event coincided with the inauguration of the Banki International Cattle Market, a memorial secondary school, and a government lodge.

In his address, Governor Zulum underscored the importance of facilitating seamless trade, particularly in the cattle industry. He pledged his administration's commitment to removing barriers that hinder economic cooperation. "I want to assure you, Your Excellency, that under my leadership, I will provide the political will and commitment to drive the process," he said.

The governor lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration for its dedication to trans-border trade, stressing the need to eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks for smoother goods flow between both nations. "The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more committed than ever to promoting trans-border trade," Zulum added.

He also announced plans to designate Banki as one of Nigeria’s free trade zones, revealing that the process was in advanced stages. The governor assured stakeholders that the state government would fulfill its obligations in realizing this initiative.

Furthermore, Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to Cameroonian President Paul Biya for supporting Nigerian refugees in Cameroon. He called for the establishment of civil authority to facilitate the safe return of over 20,000 displaced residents of Tarmu’a to their communities.

Governor Midjiyawa Bakari of the Far North region of Cameroon commended the improved security in the region, emphasizing peace-building and sustainable development. He highlighted the economic prospects of the Banki International Cattle Market and pledged to replicate similar projects in Cameroon.

Bakari also proposed a bilateral economic meeting in either Maiduguri or Marwa to strategize on enhancing regional cooperation. "We need to work hand in hand to rebuild our economy," he said.

In their remarks, Alhaji Ahmed Ashemi, President of the Borno State Chamber of Commerce, and Professor Jalou, Senior Vice President of the Regional Council of Far North, stressed the importance of stronger collaboration to maximize the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to strengthen Nigeria-Cameroon economic ties and foster regional stability.
