CROSS RIVER STATE: POLICE ARREST 81 SUSPECTS, CONVICTS IN RECENT CRIME CRACKDOWN

The police in Cross River State have reported that a total of 81 individuals were brought before various courts in the state between September and October 2023. This information was shared by the state's police spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, during a press conference in Calabar on Tuesday. During this event, the police paraded 15 suspects who had been arrested across the state during the same period.


Ugbo explained that these suspects were facing charges related to a wide range of crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, theft, vandalism, and assault. She, being a superintendent of police, also noted that the police had secured three convictions during this time, while other cases were still pending in the courts.


Regarding the paraded suspects, Ms. Ugbo revealed that their alleged offenses included murder, armed robbery, involvement in cult activities, kidnapping, unlawful possession of firearms, and even sea piracy. Additionally, she mentioned that the police had successfully recovered various types of arms and ammunition during these two months.


Items recovered includes; 13 single-barrel Dane guns, three pump-action guns, five MAC4 automatic rifles, five locally fabricated pistols, a double-barrel long gun, two G3 automatic rifles, 650 rounds of 7.62×51 LAR ammunition, 29 rounds of 7.62×39 AK-47 ammunition, eight pieces of 90m high explosives, and 10 pieces of detonator.


The police issued a warning to potential troublemakers, urging them to choose a law-abiding path as the holiday season approaches. Additionally, they cautioned those involved in communal conflicts within the state to cease their activities.
