CUSTOMS INTERCEPTS FAKE PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS, OTHER CONTRABAND GOODS WORTH N869 MILLION IN A MONTH
The Federal Operations Unit, Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service on Wednesday said it intercepted 1,2046 cartons of fake pharmaceutical products and other contraband goods worth over N869 million between January 1 and January 31.
Yusuf Lawal, the Comptroller in charge of the unit who disclosed this in Owerri, Imo State said other items seized included: 1,046 bags of Foreign parboiled rice worth N31,380,000, 62 jumbo bales of used clothing worth N7,800,000, 290 cartons of Eva soap worth N4,176,000, as well as a Toyota Corolla 2018 model worth N7,354,345.
Mr Lawal told journalists the pharmaceutical products seized were imported from India and were intercepted on the Ofosu- Benin Expressway while the cartons of soap were intercepted on the Aba-Owerri road, adding that the bags of parboiled rice were confiscated from a warehouse on the Elelenwo road in Port Harcourt on suspicion that they were smuggled into the country.

Speaking on ways to curb illegal importation of drugs from India, the comptroller said the service would synergize with relevant authorities in India as part of measures to tackle illegal importation of drugs.
Mr Lawal added that the confiscated drugs would be handed over to authorities of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control for necessary checks.
