Eight Injured as 'Molue' Bus Crashes into Road Median on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway
Eight people were injured on Friday after a commercial bus, commonly referred to as a "Molue," crashed into the road median near Ahmadiyya on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
In a statement, Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), explained that the accident occurred as the bus driver attempted to avoid hitting pedestrians at a bus stop.
The incident, involving a vehicle with registration number KTU 801 XM, was attributed to excessive speed and driver impatience. "In an attempt to avoid colliding with another LT commercial bus and pedestrians waiting at the roadside, the driver veered sharply, causing the bus to crash into the median and overturn," Taofiq said.
The crash left eight people, including five men and three women, with varying injuries. The bus driver sustained a fractured left arm. Passengers who escaped through the windows of the overturned vehicle were immediately attended to by LASTMA officers. The injured were handed over to LASAMBUS medical personnel and transported to the Ile-Epo General Hospital for treatment.
LASTMA’s Response Unit quickly removed the overturned bus to restore traffic flow, while officers from the Meiran Police Division ensured the rescue operation proceeded without disruptions.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathies to the injured and wished them a speedy recovery. He stressed the importance of adhering to traffic rules, especially speed limits, and urged vehicle operators to prioritize regular maintenance, particularly of braking systems, to prevent accidents.
“This incident highlights LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting road safety in Lagos through proactive measures and collaboration with emergency response agencies,” the statement concluded.
