Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have rescued and arrested a suspected armed robber from an irate mob, recovering a locally fabricated Beretta pistol during the operation.
According to a statement by the Command, the arrest was made on June 8, 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., following credible intelligence. A joint team comprising officers from the Independence Layout Police Division and the Anti-Cultism Squad, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch, apprehended the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Anyanwu Izuchukwu Gabriel.
The suspect, who was reportedly attacked and injured by the mob before police intervention, is currently receiving medical treatment. He has confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to track down his fleeing accomplices.
Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, commended the swift and coordinated response of the operatives and community members that led to the arrest. However, he strongly warned against mob actions and jungle justice, stressing that such practices obstruct lawful investigations and hinder the fair administration of justice.
