Fatal Accident Involving Benue Governor’s Convoy Claims One Life, Injures Another.

A pilot vehicle in the convoy of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia was reportedly involved in a tragic accident on Sunday, resulting in one fatality and injuries to another.

The incident occurred in Ihugh, a community in Vandeikya Local Government Area, while Governor Alia was visiting his country home for the Christmas celebration.

According to eyewitnesses, the crash happened along a dusty untarred road. The driver of the pilot vehicle allegedly lost visibility due to thick dust, causing the vehicle to veer off course and collide with a motorcycle carrying the victims.

A source revealed, "The governor was heading to church when one of the vehicles in his convoy veered off the untarred road due to poor visibility caused by dust."

The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.

Solomon Iorpev, the governor's Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication, confirmed the incident but clarified that it occurred after the governor had already arrived at the church.

"The vehicle involved, although part of the governor’s convoy, was not in the convoy at the time of the accident. It was on a separate mission when the crash occurred. Dust from the untarred road and an oncoming vehicle contributed to the collision with the motorcycle," Iorpev explained.

While expressing regret over the incident, Iorpev refrained from providing details about the casualty figures.

The tragic event has cast a somber mood over the governor's holiday visit, highlighting the dangers of navigating poorly maintained roads in the region.
