Former Governor Chris Ngige Escapes Attack After Convoy Comes Under Heavy Fire

The convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige, came under heavy gunfire along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns about rising insecurity and the targeting of political figures in the state.

Ngige was not present in the convoy at the time of the incident, a development many describe as a narrow escape. His former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed that the ex-governor was not travelling with the team during the coordinated attack.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, dressed in what appeared to be police and military uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer sustained gunshot injuries, after which the attackers stripped him of his uniform and rifle.

A woman who attempted to record the incident was shot and killed, while a shop owner who rushed out during the chaos was hit by bullets and is expected to undergo surgery.

The pilot vehicle was riddled with bullets, witnesses said.

Quoting The PUNCH, an eyewitness noted:

“No policeman was killed, and the escort leader who was shot has been operated upon and is expected to make a full recovery. The shop owner was lucky as the bullets didn’t lodge in his spine.”

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack and acknowledged that the convoy belonged to Ngige’s police team.
