FRESH ATTACK IN ZAMFARA: BANDITS ABDUCT OVER 100 VILLAGERS
In another tragic incident in Zamfara State, bandits have launched a fresh assault on communities near the state capital, Gusau, kidnapping more than 100 villagers, including women, children, and the elderly, in the Wanke area.
Local sources reported that among those abducted was the community's Chief Imam, who had previously been kidnapped and was recuperating from a leg injury. This marks the second time the Imam has been taken captive, underscoring the vulnerability of local leaders and residents.
So far, state officials and police have yet to release statements on the abductions.
A survivor, speaking to BBC Hausa on Wednesday, described the chaotic scene as villagers tried to escape. “Over 50 people were taken near Sabon Layi, and another 50 were abducted near Dogon Hayi,” he said, adding that the true number of victims remains uncertain due to the disorder during the attack.
The survivor recounted the horror, saying, “The bandits chased people like they were hunting animals, tracking women into their homes and abducting them. Some were caught while fleeing and dragged into the bush.”
The gunmen struck multiple villages, including Gira, Ruwa Kusa, Dogon Hayi, and Gidan Kado, seizing motorcycles, farm produce, personal belongings, and looting shops.
Community leaders in Wanke reportedly notified local authorities, but no official response has been issued.
These frequent assaults have driven many residents to flee to Gusau and other safer areas, as the region has faced nearly a decade of violent raids. “There are no more animals here,” the survivor lamented. “Once night falls, fear overtakes everyone because staying overnight in these villages is now too dangerous.”
Kidnappings and violent attacks by bandits continue to plague the region, with no word from police or state officials at the time of reporting, despite attempts to reach them.
