GHANA BECOMES FIRST COUNTRY TO RECEIVE ASTRAZENECA COVID-19 VACCINE THROUGH COVAX

Ghana has become the first country in the world to receive vaccines acquired through the United Nations-backed COVAX initiative.


Authorities on Wednesday announced a delivery of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines. 


Ghana is among 92 countries that have signed on to the COVAX program, according to a statement by Ghana’s acting Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.


He said Ghana's vaccination campaign will begin on March 2 and will be conducted in phases among prioritized groups, beginning with health workers, adults of 60 years and above, people with underlying health conditions, frontline executives, legislature, judiciary, and their related staff.


As of February 24, 2021, the Ghanian Health Services report that the West African nation has recorded 81,245 COVID-19 infections and 584 fatalities.
