Israeli Airstrike Kills 11 in Gaza, Including Former Hamas Police Chief
At least 11 people, including three children and two women, were killed in an overnight Israeli airstrike on a tent housing displaced individuals in Gaza’s Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Yunis city, according to Gaza's civil defence agency. Fifteen others sustained injuries in the attack.
The casualties include Mahmud Salah, the former chief of Hamas’ now-defunct police force, and his deputy, Hussam Shahwan, the agency’s spokesperson, Mahmud Bassal, confirmed.
The Israeli military, when contacted by AFP, stated it was investigating the incident.
On Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned of intensified military operations if Hamas continued its rocket attacks. Katz also reiterated demands for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
While recent rocket fire from Gaza has caused minimal physical damage in Israel and has diminished significantly compared to earlier stages of the conflict, it remains a political challenge for the Israeli government amid the prolonged conflict.
