MDAT-GoG WARNS OF LACK OF ROBUST SECURITY PATROLS IN LAGOS PORT AS NIGERIA NAVY FOILS PIRATE ATTACK ON GULF OF GUINEA
Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade – Gulf of Guinea (MDAT-GoG) on Friday, January 29 issued an alert warning that the Port of Lagos no longer has robust security patrols in the secure anchorage area.
The alert came on the heels of news of that the Nigerian Maritime & Safety Agency (NIMASA) now shoulder the responsibility of security coverage at Lagos Anchorage in Nigeria.
MDAT-GoG advised vessels to remain vigilant.
On January 26, just three days before the alert from MDAT-GoG, an underway bulk carrier named SEAFRONTIER was suspiciously approached in position 01 50 43 N, 003 25 10 E, approximately 272 NM S of Lagos. The vessel which was reported to be under security escort as at the time increased its speed from 13.7 to 14.2 knots to shake off the security threat. The vessel and crew are safe.

In a security-related incident, an attempt by Pirates to attack a vessel sailing on the Gulf of Guinea has been foiled by the Nigerian Navy. Eons Intelligence gathered that Pirates boarded the vessel in position 02 55 00 N, 001 56 06 E, approximately 192 NM SE of Accra, Ghana at about 5.24 am while the crew secured themselves in the citadel.
Report indicates that by 9 pm on Sunday, the pirates had been dislodged with the support from the Nigeria Navy leaving the vessel and crew members safe.
