Military Foils Boko Haram Attack in Kukawa: Zulum Salute's Troops Bravery
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has praised the Nigerian military for their decisive defense of Kukawa town following a failed attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to overrun the area. The incident occurred on Monday, November 25, 2024, and was executed by troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK).
The insurgents, emboldened by a recent attack on Kareto on November 16, 2024, launched an offensive against Kukawa using motorcycles, assault rifles, and RPGs. Entering through the Gudumbali axis, they crossed defensive trenches but were met with swift and coordinated counteraction by troops of 19 Brigade Cross Kauwa and 403 Amphibious Brigade Baga, supported by the Nigerian Air Force.
In the ensuing battle, the insurgents suffered heavy losses, with many killed, and their vehicles and motorcycles confiscated. Despite this success, the military reported four fatalities among Nigerian Army personnel, two injuries to Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members, and one civilian casualty, identified as Masa Mallam Abba Zaraye.
Governor Zulum expressed both gratitude and sympathy, saluting the troops for their bravery while mourning the lives lost. He extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and support to the armed forces.
Zulum urged the military to maintain vigilance, cautioning against complacency. “While this victory is commendable, our troops must remain guided by the rules of engagement in asymmetric warfare and prepare for possible retaliatory attacks,” he stated.
The governor also called on citizens to assist security agencies with actionable intelligence to counter threats effectively.
