Nigerian Army to Introduce Welfare Buses, Increase Allowances for Troops

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel, pledging to improve their service conditions and ensure a dignified post-service life. He made this assurance on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, while addressing troops at the 9 Brigade Parade Ground, Ikeja Cantonment, Maryland, Lagos, during an operational visit to Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army and other units within its Area of Responsibility.

During his visit, General Oluyede was received and briefed on the operational and administrative status of the division by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa. He assured troops that his administration is focused on improving their welfare, with several initiatives already in motion. These include:


Provision of affordable housing for soldiers to ensure a secure post-service life.

The COAS Welfare Loan Scheme to provide financial support.


Increased Ration Cash Allowance for troops.


Adequate provision of uniforms and military kits to enhance operational readiness.


Construction of new accommodations and renovation of existing barracks to improve living conditions.


Introduction of welfare buses to facilitate troops' transportation within Lagos Metropolis.



The Army Chief emphasized the importance of professionalism and urged soldiers to remain focused on their constitutional duty of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity. He also cautioned against interagency rivalry, encouraging seamless collaboration with other security agencies.

During his tour, General Oluyede commissioned key projects, including the newly renovated and remodeled Commanders' Residences for 9 Brigade and 70 Supply and Transport Units, as well as Senior Non-Commissioned Officers' and Corporals' Quarters. At Ojoo Cantonment, he inaugurated the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps Warrant Officers and Sergeants’ Mess.


His visit also included inspections of Dodan Barracks and 65 Battalion, where he assessed ongoing projects and interacted with personnel.
