PANIC AS SOME STUDENTS AND STAFF OF UNILAG CONTRACT COVID-19

There is panic in the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, as some students and staff have contracted the Coronavirus disease.

However, the identities of students, how they contracted the virus, and the hospitals where they were tested positive cannot be ascertained as of this time.

Sources say some students and staff residing in about four halls of residence within the University contracted the virus and are currently in isolation.

Eons Intelligence gathered that rooms of the infected students have been locked by the school management while others have been asked to comply with Covid-19 guidelines and protocols.

There has been a surge in COVID-19 infections recorded in Lagos in the last one week following the emergence of a new Delta variant in the country on July 8 which was also recently discovered in Oyo State.

The delta variant has been described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the ‘most transmissible variant.’

According to the global body, the variant is responsible for the spike in about 98 countries across the world.

Also known as B.1.617.2, the Delta variant has been linked to 90 percent of the rise in cases in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).

Multiple reports say that the variant is somewhat more resistant to COVID-19 vaccines.

Nigeria has so far recorded over 169,000 cases of covid-19 and more than 2,000 fatalities
