Presidency Confirms Egbetokun’s Resignation as Inspector-General of Police
The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has stepped down from his position as Inspector-General of Police.
According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Egbetokun tendered his resignation in a letter on Monday, citing family matters that require his full attention.
However, sources within the Presidential Villa indicated that the former police chief was asked to resign during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Monday evening. A senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the decision followed a closed-door discussion with the President.
Egbetokun was observed arriving at the Presidential Villa around 6:40 pm in his official vehicle. He later returned to the Villa at about 8:00 pm, during which time security checks were reportedly conducted on his vehicle by operatives.
His resignation comes amid growing public concern over the country’s security situation, including incidents of kidnappings, banditry, and attacks in several states. Recent cases have drawn significant attention, intensifying scrutiny on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
During an interfaith Iftar with state governors on Monday, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing insecurity, stating that plans to establish state police would move forward. He emphasised that security remains fundamental to national stability and economic growth.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023. Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. He succeeded Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 following an extension.
