SOUTH AFRICA SUSPENDS ADMINISTRATION OF ASTRAZENEZA COVID-19 VACCINES

Reports indicate that South Africa has suspended the administration of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines over concerns that the jab does not work the new viral strain.

Recall that on Monday December 1, Eons Intelligence reported that South Africa received its first consignment of 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.

A trial carried out on the vaccine showed it only provides minimal protection against mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms caused by the new variant which was first detected in South Africa and the UK.

“It’s a temporary issue that we have to hold on AstraZeneca until we figure out these issues,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told newsmen on Sunday.

Authorities say the 1.5 million AstraZeneca vaccines which will expire in April, will be kept until scientists give clear indications on their use.

Recall that on November 20, 2020, AstraZeneca/Oxford said its COVID-19 vaccine was 90% effective against the COVID-19 disease.

South Africa is Africa's most hit COVID-19 country with 1,476,135 infections and 46,290 deaths.
