STRANGE DEATHS IN KANO LINKED TO MALARIA, NOT CORONAVIRUS - COMMISSIONER

Kano State Government has said COVID-19 did not cause the recent unusual death cases recorded in the state but "complications arising from hypertension, diabetes, meningitis, and acute malaria."

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner of Information, Muhammad Garba, on Sunday night.

Recently, there have been rising death cases in the state amid coronavirus pandemic, which created panic to the residents, because the death cases were not traced to any cause.

Garba, who calmed the residents by stating that the death cases were not as a result of coronavirus pandemic, said investigations into the cause of death is ongoing.

However, he insisted that the deaths are not connected to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Reports have shown that most of the deaths were caused by complications arising from hypertension, diabetes, meningitis, and acute malaria," he said.

Earlier, the governor of the state said, the government has abandoned Kano state by not supporting the state in the fight against coronavirus, he called upon the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to help the state in the fight against the pandemic.

Garba stated further that the government has three modern Isolation Centres where patients who tested positive receive care. He also urged the Federal government to help in getting additional isolation centers as soon as possible, adding that the state government with limited resources available has been able to hire hotels to isolate suspected cases.

The Kano State Government is collaborating with Bayero University Kano to establish a testing center within the institution. The testing center will be ready for use in two weeks after certification from the NCDC.

"This will, indeed, enhance our determination to ensure that every suspected case undergoes a test," the commissioner said.

A Report indicates 20 persons died from undisclosed ailments in Kano in less than two days. The deceased include professors, a newspaper editor, and other professionals.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on Sunday night, Kano has recorded 77 cases and one death. Kano has not discharged any patient yet, according to the state ministry of health.
