SUSPENDED UNILAG VC OGUNDIPE MAY BE REINSTATED ON WEDNESDAY – OFFICIALS

Suspended Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, may be reinstated on Wednesday, November 11.

Reports say the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, is expected to announce his reinstatement at a press conference in Abuja at 12 pm.

An official who works in the office of the VC told The Punch that there are strong indications that the Federal Government would reinstate him today.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, also confirmed that the minister would address the press on Ogundipe's suspension.

However, renowned broadcast journalist, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday, November 10, that: "Unilag VC reinstated! The truth prevails. We said it that Babalakin was wrong."

The University's Governing Council headed by Babalakin had sacked Ogundipe on August 12, 2020 during a meeting held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) building in Abuja.

The council, however, appointed Prof Theophilus Omololu Soyombo of the Faculty of Social Sciences as the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Ogundipe was alleged to have been involved in serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness and abuse of office.

President Muhammadu Buhari had removed Prof. Theophilus Soyombo, the Acting Vice Chancellor appointed by Babalakin and appointed Prof Folashade Ogunsola as the acting VC pending the report of presidential panel.

Eons intelligence reported that seven members of the Governing Council voted for the removal of Prof. Ogundipe while four voted against it.

Only one member voted that he should be suspended.

However, the unions; ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, condemned the removal and described it as illegal.

The Senate and the four staff unions passed a vote of confidence on Prof. Ogundipe and insisted he remains the Vice Chancellor.

But Ogundipe denied the allegations and subsequently approached the court to challenge his removal.

In a bid to calm tension in the university, the Federal Government ordered both Ogundipe and Babalakin to vacate office.

The FG's directive came hours after Ogundipe filed a lawsuit at the National Industrial Court challenging his removal by the institution's Governing council.
