THE CORONAVIRUS DISEASE WOULD NOT BE THE LAST PANDEMIC - WHO DG WARNS

Dr Tredros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General (DG) of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has said the Coronavirus disease would not be the last pandemic.


The DG, who made this known in a statement on Tuesday, September called on leaders around the world to prepare for the next pandemic.


He also advocated for nations to heavily invest in public health infrastructure so that casualties in the subsequent pandemics would be minimized.


He said, “This will not be the last pandemic. History teaches us that outbreaks and pandemics are a fact of life. But when the next pandemic comes, the world must be ready – more ready than it was this time.”

So far, more than 27.19 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel Coronavirus globally, and 888,326 have died since the first case wes identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.


In Nigeria, as of September 9th, 2020, according to the NCDC, 426,803 persons have been tested for the dreadful virus.


55,456 cases have been confirmed positive, 43,334 cases have been discharged and 1,067 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory since February, 2020.
