Tragedy Strikes on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: One Fatality, Multiple Accidents Cause Gridlock

Two separate accidents involving container-laden trucks and cars occurred on Kara Bridge, outbound Lagos, causing significant disruptions. Seven vehicles were involved, including a Volkswagen bus (KJA 436 YD), a Nissan Urvan (CO 1203 RS), a Mack truck (T17083 LA), another Mack truck with no registration number, a blue Iveco truck (KMC 594 ZQ), a Toyota Hiace bus (14C241DT), and a Sino truck (AAB 440 XC).

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the first accident, which occurred around midnight, claimed one life and left four others injured. "The bus driver died on the spot, and his body was retrieved by the park association," said Lagos Sector Commander Kehinde Hamzat.

The second accident happened almost immediately afterward but fortunately resulted in no casualties. Both crashes were attributed to overspeeding, which led to loss of control.

Emergency responders, including FRSC officials, police officers, and personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), worked tirelessly at the scene to clear obstructions and restore traffic flow. Despite their efforts, vehicular movement was severely hindered, with traffic backed up to the Seven-Up area.

Commander Hamzat urged motorists to remain calm, assuring them that professionals were on-site with necessary equipment to address the situation. He also advised those with time-sensitive commitments to explore alternative routes or postpone their trips until the situation was fully resolved.
