Troops Foil Terrorist Attack in Niger State, Engage Bandits in Fierce Gun Battle
Troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack on Bangi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State on June 24, 2025.
Acting on credible intelligence, troops intercepted about 300 armed bandits in Kwanar Dutse Forest. The terrorists were reportedly moving towards Kwatankoro Forest to either launch attacks on nearby communities or escape intensified military operations in Zamfara State.
A heavy gun battle ensued, lasting over three hours. Air Force jets later carried out precision airstrikes on the terrorists’ escape routes, resulting in significant casualties. Though exact figures remain unclear, blood trails were observed along their withdrawal paths, indicating substantial losses among the criminals.
Seventeen soldiers sadly lost their lives during the operation, while ten others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at a military facility.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluwafemi Oluyede, expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and assured that the injured are receiving the best medical care. He reiterated the military’s commitment to ending terrorism and protecting communities across Nigeria.
The Army urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
