Turkey Reaffirms $5bn Trade Target With Nigeria During Tinubu’s State Visit

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to achieving a $5 billion trade volume with Nigeria, disclosing that discussions toward the target are already underway.

President Erdogan made this known on Tuesday in Ankara during a joint press briefing with President Bola Tinubu, held as part of the Nigerian leader’s State Visit to Türkiye.

He said the planned establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee would help expand trade relations and support increased Turkish investments in Nigeria to meet the target. Erdogan also commended President Tinubu’s commitment to economic reforms and investment attraction, noting the presence of senior Nigerian officials as evidence of that resolve.

According to him, both leaders reviewed bilateral relations across key sectors including trade, investment, energy, education and defence, while identifying significant untapped potential. He further expressed optimism about cooperation in the energy sector, particularly between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian partners.

On security, President Erdogan pledged Türkiye’s support to Nigeria in tackling terrorism, especially within the Sahel region, citing his country’s experience in counter-insurgency. He added that discussions were held on enhanced military training, intelligence cooperation and defence industry partnerships.

In his remarks, President Tinubu thanked Türkiye for its openness to collaboration and emphasized the need for inclusive economic growth that integrates vulnerable groups. He also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to peace and stability in Africa, stressing ongoing efforts to counter terrorism and destabilization.

President Tinubu praised Erdogan’s role in promoting global peace, particularly his country’s involvement in Somalia.

At the conclusion of the bilateral engagements, officials of both countries exchanged nine agreements covering areas such as defence cooperation, trade and economic relations, diaspora policy, education, media and communication, halal quality infrastructure, diplomacy training, and social development.
