Viral Misinformation: Police Decry Circulation of Old Videos Undermining National Security
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed serious concern over the resurgence of outdated video content being recirculated across social media platforms in an attempt to tarnish the image of the police and destabilize national security.
In a strongly worded statement, the NPF described the trend as a deliberate act of misinformation designed to mislead the public and sow distrust in the Force. The police emphasized that while efforts are underway to foster public trust and enhance operational efficiency, the reappearance of misleading and outdated videos poses a threat to internal peace and order.
Two specific videos were highlighted. The first features a Police Mobile Force (PMF) officer lamenting the alleged poor conditions faced by personnel deployed to Yobe State. The police clarified that this footage is not recent and originally surfaced several years ago. According to the NPF, administrative measures were taken at the time to address the concerns raised. The current circulation of the video is seen as a calculated attempt to discredit the police.
The second video in question involves an officer from the Counter Terrorism Unit, who claimed that banditry was politically motivated and alleged that officers were sent into conflict zones without sufficient ammunition. The NPF confirmed that these allegations were investigated and found to be baseless, leading to disciplinary actions against those involved.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has issued a stern warning to individuals propagating such false narratives. He urged the public to verify content before sharing and refrain from engaging in activities that could incite fear or erode confidence in the nation's security institutions.
"The recirculation of such misleading videos is not only malicious but also dangerous," the IGP stated. "It misinforms the public, ridicules the Police institution, and poses a threat to the country’s internal security."
The IGP reiterated the Force’s commitment to improving officers' welfare and ensuring effective policing across Nigeria. He reassured Nigerians of the Police’s readiness to combat crime and maintain peace, calling on citizens to support the Force by rejecting and reporting the spread of misinformation.
The Nigeria Police Force urges the public to remain vigilant, verify the authenticity of content before circulation, and support efforts to strengthen national security.
