FG ARRAIGNS TERRORIST NEGOTIATOR, TUKUR MAMU, ON 10 COUNTS

The former negotiator of terrorists, Tukur Mamu, has on Tuesday 21st March 2033 remanded by the Federal Government through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) at the high court sitting in Abuja.


 

Mamu was arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo on 10 counts bordering on terrorism financing, particularly on the recent Abuja-Kaduna train attack.



The defendant was arrested and detained at Cairo International Airport on 6th September 2022 when he was traveling to Saudi Arabia for Lesser Hajj before he was repatriated to Nigeria.


However, Mamu was alleged to have received $120,000 as ransom payments on behalf of the Boko Haram terrorist group. The monies were believed to have been donated by the families of hostages abducted at the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.

Nonetheless, he was accused of having voice note conversations relating to the hostages with the spokesperson of Boko Haram, Baba Amadu. Also, the $300,000 found in his possession after his arrest was terrorist funds.


Similarly, Mamu, who is also known to be an aide to Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, was involved in negotiations for the release of the passengers kidnapped during the attack on a Kaduna-bound train in March 2022.


Thereupon, he pleaded not guilty to all the counts and denied having fidelity to the terrorists.


Subsequently, taking arguments for and against the bail request, Justice Ekwo reserved ruling till a date that would be communicated to the parties while the Judge ordered that he remains in DSS detention pending the ruling on the bail application.
