WOMEN ARISE WRITES SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO LEAH SHARIBU WHO TURNS 17 IN CAPTIVITY
Leah Sharibu, a young girl alongside over 100 other school girls was kidnapped in a Girl’s school by Islamic extremists in the northern town of Dapchi, since February 2018.
However, other school girls kidnapped have been released while Leah was held back because she refused to convert to Islam. She is being treated as a slave and punished for holding on to her Christian faith.
‘’But i am a Christian,’’ she told one of her classmates who later shared that the girls had tried her to teach her the Muslim prayers.
Yesterday, she clocked 17, whilst still in the captivity of her abductors. Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of the Women Arise issued a statement praising her for her courage, strength, and dedication.
The statement reads;
I lend my voice to those of other freedom loving patriots across the globe to celebrate our darling Leah Sharibu as she turns 17.
Leah defines courage as all that stands between her and personal liberty is the conviction of her courage.
Every further day she spends in captivity indicts the Nigerian government that has been unable to fulfill its promises and the purpose of government.
It is also a sad commentary that supposedly conscionable Nigerians appear to have abandoned this girl and her family to their fate.
This ought not to have been so. The struggle for Leah's freedom should have been upbeat and not tepid.
On this occasion of her birthday, may we demand that we all re-dedicate ourselves anew and afresh to the worthy cause of working assiduously for Leah Sharibu's release from Boko Haram captivity.
We also demand more accountability from government on issues of child protection and friendliness. Leah Sharibu and the case of Chibok girls, who remain perpetually in captivity since 2014 give indications that Nigeria itself may have become a giant prison of a sort for her children.
There shall be no relenting until freedom is won for Leah and all the others in one form of insidious captivity or another.
