Death Toll Mounts to 23 as Lassa Fever Outbreak Worsens in Ebonyi State
The Ebonyi State government has confirmed 23 deaths from Lassa Fever out of 48 confirmed cases reported in 2024. Between January and December, the state recorded 394 suspected cases of the disease.
Governor Francis Nwifuru revealed the figures during a handover ceremony of Lassa Fever support activities from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, to the state government in Abakaliki.
While mourning the loss of lives, Nwifuru lauded MSF's crucial role in treating survivors and managing the outbreak.
“The spread of this virus is believed to be worsened by sociocultural practices, poor health-seeking behavior, inadequate environmental sanitation, lack of awareness, and limited community engagement," the governor noted.
Nwifuru highlighted MSF’s vital contributions:
“We commend the outstanding efforts of our international health partner, MSF, for their invaluable contribution. Since becoming a health partner to Ebonyi State in 2018, their humanitarian achievements have greatly improved the health and well-being of our people.”
According to Nwifuru, over 4,726 Lassa Fever cases have been reported across Nigeria this year, with a significant fatality rate. In Ebonyi State alone, 394 suspected cases led to 48 confirmed infections, resulting in 23 deaths. The remaining 25 patients were successfully treated and discharged.
The governor expressed satisfaction with MSF's efforts in the state’s health sector and reiterated his commitment to eradicating the virus.
“As governor, I am highly satisfied with the proactive and remarkable efforts you have made in our health sector. Your partnership has been instrumental, and I am confident that with your continued support, we will eliminate the threat of Lassa Fever.”
He urged MSF leadership to consider the state's appeal to sustain their partnership for the sake of humanity. Nwifuru also pledged his administration’s support to intensify efforts in eradicating Lassa Fever in Ebonyi State.
