Drunk Driver Dies, Three Injured in Fatal Crash on Otedola Bridge

A tragic accident occurred along the Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday, claiming the life of a driver suspected to be drunk and leaving three passengers injured.

Accident Caused by Speeding and Drunk Driving

According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the driver, who was speeding excessively, lost control of the vehicle and crashed near the Conoil filling station, inward Secretariat.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased driver was under the influence of alcohol and lost control while driving at top speed. The crash led to his instant death, while three other occupants—two men and a woman—sustained severe injuries," Taofiq stated.

During rescue operations, LASTMA officials discovered items inside the wrecked Toyota Sienna (KTU 666 JP), including:

  • N48,200 in cash
  • A mobile phone
  • 15 sachets of alcoholic gin

Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) later transported the deceased’s body to a morgue in Yaba, while LASTMA operatives towed the accident vehicle to the agency’s yard to prevent further traffic congestion.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

"This tragic loss underscores the dangers of reckless and impaired driving. I urge all motorists to completely avoid alcohol consumption before getting behind the wheel, as such negligence continues to pose a grave risk to lives and property," he warned.

Authorities have once again emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence, urging motorists to prioritize safety and responsible driving at all times.
