WE ARE INVESTIGATING GOVERNORS, FORMER GOVERNORS AND ACCOMPLICES - EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating serving and former State Governors for corruption, Ibrahim Magu said.

Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the EFCC made this known on Thursday, June 11 at a press conference marking the 2020 Democracy Day in Abuja.

Magu said that the anti-graft agency is also investigating suspects who conspire with the Governors in any fraudulent act.

However, he did not disclose the identities of those under investigation, saying such would obstruct investigations.

The acting Chairman said that the agency had recovered assets worth over N980bn in the last five years.

He added that the agency had also recovered non-monetary assets that include real estate, private jets, oil vessels, filling stations, schools, hotels, trucks, cars, jewellery, shopping malls and electronics.

“We are on course in all the cases we are prosecuting, our scorecard in the area of conviction is 2,240 in the last five years and we covered assets in excess of N980bn, with quite a large array of non-monetary assets. We are also investigating serving and former governors and questioning those conniving with them,” he said.

Concerning the case of Senator Orji Kalu, who was freed from the Kuje Custodian Centre by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCOS) on June 4,

Magu said the EFCC would go back to court.

The prosecuting counsel for the anti-graft agency, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), after the release of Kalu, said the Commission had applied for a fresh trial and is, therefore, waiting for the Federal High Court Chief Judge to reassign Kalu’s N7.65bn fraud case to a judge.

The anti-graft agency added that it has arrested 1,444 suspects, which over 300 have been arraigned in court.
