MYSTERIOUS DISEASE KILLS 17 PERSONS IN BENUE COMMUNITY
17 persons have been confirmed dead following the outbreak of a mysterious disease in Okpeilo-Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a statement issued by the State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Emmanuel Ikwulono, a case of the strange illness was on reported on Monday, November 9, at the State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.
He said the symptoms being reported include fever, abdominal pain and general body weakness, while some complain of stooling and vomiting.
The Commissioner said the State Government has immediately commenced investigations to ascertain the cause of the illness.
The statement further read in parts, “At the time of the receipt of the report yesterday, 9th November 2020, about 17 persons were already said to have died of the illness.
“We currently have one case which was brought to Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi by a relative of the patient. Others are receiving treatment in different hospitals.”
He noted that the State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has approved funds to enable the State Ministry of Health and Human Services to carry out the investigation.
He admonished all residents of the affected community and its environs to maintain good hygiene practices and report anyone with the said symptoms to the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers in the Local Government Area or call the Benue Emergency Operations Centre.
In the last one week, several people have died from strange illnesses in different States of Nigeria.
On Tuesday, November 9, Eons Intelligence reported that 11 persons were hospitalized in Oyo State following an outbreak from a mysterious disease, while 7 casualties were recorded in Bauchi from a yellow fever outbreak.
Similarly, it has been reported that a mysterious disease is claiming the lives of residents in Delta and Enugu.
As of the time of filing this report, 30 persons have died in Delta, while 57 casualties have been recorded in Enugu.
