FLOOD ALERT: LAGOS STATE WARNS 4 LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS TO RELOCATE

The Lagos State Government has warned four Local Governments of the impending flood in their region, and urges them to relocate.

The four Local Governments include Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki and Ikorodu.

Mr. Tunji Bello, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, gave this warning in a statement issued on Thursday, July 9th, 2020.

Bello said the aforementioned regions would experience torrential rainfall between now and September.

The Commissioner enjoined residents of the areas particularly those with buildings in low lying areas to immediately migrate to another place to avoid any loss of lives and properties.

Bello also identified 14 other Local Government Areas that could face flood risks this year.

The areas are Lagos Island, Alimosho, Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Kosofe, Eti-Osa, Apapa, Ojo, Oshodi/Isolo, Agege, Ifako Ijaiye, Badagry, Surulere, and Ajeromi-Ifelodun.

The Commissioner however said the State Government would intensify efforts at clearing the drains and removing pet bottles and Styrofoam.

According to him, it is regrettable that several heaps of pet plastic bottles, Styrofoams and solid waste are daily being excavated from the drainage channels in Mushin, Idi Oro, Idi Araba, LUTH and Mile 2.

The Commissioner also said Investigation shows that some traders, especially in Mushin, dump waste from their daily sales and articles straight into the drains, thus inhibiting the free flow of water into the channels.

He warned that anyone caught dumping refuse in any drainage channel would face the full wrath of the law.
