(VIDEO) SEVERAL DEAD AS MULTIPLE EXPLOSIONS ROCK LARGEST CITY IN EQUATORIAL GUINEA

Not less than 20 persons were confirmed dead as multiple explosions rocked a military camp in Bata, Equatorial Guinea's largest city.

Reports indicate that about 600 residents of the city suffered severe injuries while several buildings and properties were destroyed as a result of the inferno. Some local hospitals have been overwhelmed by the number of patients admitted.

The cause of the explosion has not been ascertained but reports suggest they might have emanated from the military camp's armoury, which houses the army's special forces and the paramilitary.

Video footage posted on social media from the aftermath of the explosions showed a chaotic scene of distressed people fleeing as smoke drifted over the area.

In a tweet, France's Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, Olivier Brochenin, who described the incident as 'catastrophe', sent his condolences to the victims.
