The Borno State Government has expressed grave concern over a recent spike in terrorist activities across vulnerable spots in the state, particularly in Chibok, Damboa, and Kukawa Local Government Areas. In response, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has called for enhanced security measures and renewed efforts to address the challenges.

Reports indicate that multiple attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in the Southern Borno Senatorial District resulted in significant loss of life and property. In Chibok, villages such as Bamzir, Njilang, Shikarkir, and Yimirmugza suffered substantial destruction, with Shikarki, Whuntaku, Mbalala, and Pemi wards identified as the worst-hit areas. Five lives were lost, two individuals were injured, and at least 74 people were displaced. Additionally, five churches, several market stalls, and business premises were destroyed in the attacks.

Governor Zulum, who received security briefs on the incidents, extended his condolences to the affected communities through direct communication and their representatives. He noted that these attacks are reminiscent of the tragic abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014. Despite ongoing efforts to rebuild Chibok and restore its dignity, the governor expressed dismay over the insurgents’ renewed attacks on the community.

In a statement, the governor commended the resilience of the people of Chibok, noting their determination to remain in their ancestral homes despite the challenges.

On January 14, the Borno State Security Council convened to review the security situation across the state. The council acknowledged the significant progress made by security forces but identified vulnerable enclaves requiring enhanced tactical measures. The council commended the military for decimating Boko Haram factions while noting that remnants of the insurgents, driven by hunger and in-fighting, continue sporadic attacks to loot supplies.

The state government observed that recent attacks have targeted resettled and economically thriving communities, particularly those engaged in agriculture, fishing, and animal husbandry. Governor Zulum emphasized the government's commitment to its durable solutions for internal displacement policy (2024) and the 25-Year Development Plan (2020), both of which aim to accelerate mass resettlement and economic recovery.

In his remarks, the governor assured the people of Chibok that proactive measures would be taken to prevent future attacks. He called for improved military strategies and urged citizens to remain resolute, emphasizing that insurgents fear united and resilient communities.

The Borno State Government reiterated its determination to overcome the challenges posed by insurgents and ensure sustained peace and prosperity across the state.
