Amotekun Foils Desperate Gambit: 41-Year-Old Man Fakes Own Kidnapping
The Ogun State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, has intercepted a self-kidnap plot allegedly orchestrated by a 41-year-old man, Enitan Awoyemi, to avoid paying a debt of approximately N1 million.
In a statement released Wednesday, Amotekun Commander Brigadier General Alade Adedigba (retd.) explained that Awoyemi, a resident of Irolu-Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area, reportedly staged his own kidnapping to evade a substantial gambling-related debt.
The scheme was exposed after Awoyemi’s wife, Mrs. Tope Awoyemi, informed the Amotekun Irolu outpost on November 10 that her husband had contacted her, claiming he had been kidnapped the previous day by unknown captors who were demanding a N5 million ransom for his release.
“Following the report, Amotekun’s Intelligence Unit launched an investigation into the alleged abduction, uncovering that Enitan Awoyemi owed about N1 million from gambling on a lotto game,” the statement read.
Awoyemi, a regular gambler, had previously won N6 million and used part of his winnings to purchase a Toyota Corolla Sport car and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle for commercial use. However, unable to settle his current debt, he allegedly faked his own abduction as a way out.
Amotekun operatives, in collaboration with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and local authorities, tracked Awoyemi to Ijagba town and then to Ota in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. Upon apprehension, officers noted a strong smell of insecticide on Awoyemi, suggesting a possible suicide attempt, and he was rushed to Rufina Private Hospital in Iperu for treatment.
Brigadier General Adedigba assured the public that Awoyemi would face appropriate legal proceedings. “Once he is discharged from the hospital, he will be handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
The Amotekun Commander praised the collaborative efforts that led to Awoyemi’s capture and encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, noting, “This case highlights the importance of community cooperation in enhancing safety and security.”
